Elementary Religious Education / Young Disciples - Grades K-6:
The Young Disciples Kindergarten through 6th grade Family Formation program is held at the Lower School campus at 6255 E. Mockingbird Lane on the first Sunday of the month. The program runs from September to the first week in May. In addition to the Family Formation program, there are optional, monthly family activities that will take place year-round for families looking for more opportunities to engage the community.
Family Formation for our Young Disciples
Family Faith Formation is a dynamic program where both parent/guardians and children will learn and grow together in their faith through both home and church catechesis. It is not your typical drop off program. We are building our faith community one family at a time!
The mission of Family Faith Formation is to help parents/guardians respond to the Church's call to be "the first and foremost educators of their children." Our purpose is to aid families as they grow in their love and knowledge of the Catholic Faith.
The Family Faith Formation program is designed to enrich both the child and parent/guardian in their faith. Parents and children will gather once a month at the St. Thomas Aquinas Lower School. Children will gather in their age appropriate groups where they will receive formal catechesis from a volunteer catechist. Parents will gather in the Lower School gym and be engaged in the same topic of the week through talks, discussion, fellowship, and preparing for the weeks ahead. These shared learning experiences spill over into the family's everyday life as they open the doors to discussion of the Catholic Faith and begin to live and breathe the life of the Church.
After our monthly gathering, parents/guardians and children will receive their take home lessons to learn and discuss as a family for the remaining weeks of the month. These lessons take about one hour a week; they are fun and easy to navigate and they bring the family together in their faith. "The right and duty of parents to give education is essential, original, and primary, and it is irreplaceable and incapable of being entirely delegated to others." Familiaris Consortio, 36
An integral part of our children's faith formation is participation in Sunday Liturgy. Sunday liturgy reinforces the family packets. While attending classes is important for learning the practical knowledge of our Catholic teachings, faith should also be experienced. To be part of the parish family, to worship together each Sunday is to be part of faith in action.
